EKSENA

 

The scene moves from the present to the past and to the vision of future for the liberation of men and women, particularly in the intimate and domestic relationship.

 

Stage is set for many doors where men and women can move freely. Imaginary living room and bedroom behind layers of walls serving as symbols for the breaking of time barrier.

 

Scene begins with the haunting breaking of song and then to bitter crying, the song in a staccato, frenzied quality; crying in loud, thudding manner, and then to despair, and then to a gripping silence.

 

Movement in the play is symbolic—and the characters move within the play by way of the ideas. The characters are sketches of players of the game of DV, all wanting to letting loose and setting themselves free from life’s scripts.

 

CHARACTERS

 

BERNARD.                         Old age, hair white, stooped shoulders. Memory marred both

by love and loathsome for self because of DV experiences. He

beat his wife, his father beat his wife and his children, and he is

beaten.

 

 

JAMES                        Young man, preferably young adult. Grandson of Man 1. Son

of  Man 2. Saw all: the beatings. Heard all: the story of the

tragic.

 

FELY                                    Old age, hair white, skinny, jaunt faced, bearer of all the

hardships. Went through all: the beatings, the memories.

Wants children to go through the same, sacrificing their own

happiness.

 

LETICIA                        Religious daughter, willing to suffer, worker, martyr-type, not

                                    complaining. Suffered a lot. She remembers. Confused.

 

PERLITA                       Torn between her memory and her dream for freedom. She

remembers all. Conflicted and confused. 

 

MELITA                        A neigbor who is victim of DV; has cancer and has survived.

 

NATY                                    Torn between duty for family and dream of setting herself free

from tradition of sacrifice.     

 

ANGELI                        Wants freedom for herself. Wants her person.         

 

 

ANDREA AND SUPPORT GROUP OF WOMEN

 

NEIGHBORS

 

 

SCENE 1. NIGHT. SURROUNDINGS DARK. ALL IS STILL. COMPLETE SILENCE. LIGHTS OUT.

 

VOICES, IN STACCATO, FROM ALL THE MEN, AND INSTERSPERSED, ALSO IN STACCATO, BY ALL THE WOMAN, DAUGHTERS, AND GRANDDAUGHTERS.

 

 

BERNARD                        Okininayo!

 

FELY                                    Saan, saan! Pangngaasim, saan!

 

(Uloden ni Bernard ni Fely a mapan iti likud ti entablado. Agtultuloy ti riaw ken anug-og ken panangpasardeng. SFX. LO.)

 

JAMES                        (Nabartek, sumrek iti balay manipud iti makanawan nga entablado. AGBASINGBASING. ) Okininam! Okinanyo amin a kaarruba! ‘Niat’ bibiangyo kaniak? Sika, dakayo amin, ‘niat’ bibiangyo no nabartekak, e? Dakayo a biangot, makibibiangkayo!

 

ANGELI                        Huston! Stop it!

 

NATY                                    Nanang, nanang! (Agtaray iti altar, agparintumeng. Irugina ti agavemaria).

 

PERLITA                        Tatang, nanang! (Agtaray iti altar, agparintumeng. Agavemaria!)

 

LETY                                    Dios por santo a santa maria a babassit, a santa maria a dadakkel, pakawanennakami apo, pakawanem dagiti basbasolmi, pakawanem ti amami, pakawanem ti inami, pakawanem amin, uray awan basolda.

 

(Nakaparintumengen dagiti tallo, rugianda ti aglualo, mangrugi iti nababa a boses, santo agpagungga a nakapigpigsa…church bells begin to ring, softer, and then louder)

 

Talloda:

 

Ave Maria a napnoka iti grasia, pakawanem kadi ala, pakawanem kadi, ala, pakawanem dagiti nagbasolanda…

 

PERLITA                        (Sangnguenna ti tallaong) Di kadi makaruk-at ti tao iti ranggas ti familia no kakaaduennat’ agkararag?

 

NATY                                    No agkararagtayo, umay ti Espiritu Santo kadagiti ima, ket uray no iyarrabismo, aglaan daytoy, ket awan no kuat’ lemma ta palag-anen ti nalag-an nga ima ni Apo Dios, di ngamin?

 

LETY                                    Dakayo amin a babbai iti tallaong, denggenyo: Di kadi ta iti kararag, no agparintumengtayo ken Apo Dios, denggenna dagiti sangsangittayo? No agparintumentayo, ammona, ammo ni Apo Dios, ammo ti sibibiag a Dios, ammona, ammona nga iti pusotayo, kenkuana a dumwdawattayo iti tibker ti nakem? Tapno maibturan ti kada sipat ti asawa, di ngamin?

 

PERLITA                        Isu nga agparintumentayo, kakabsat. Aglawag koma ti panunotda, Apo!

 

NATIVIDAD                        Isu nga agkararagtayo kakabsat. Kakaasiam koma dagiti marangranggasan, Apo!

 

(FELY, from the back, joins them before the altar… AGPARINTUMENG)

 

(MELITA AND ANDREA rush in from the audience; speak from from there)

 

MELITA                        (Addresses the audience). Napadasak aminen. Amin-amin.

 

ANDREA                        Kinugtarannaka ti asawam?

 

LETTY                        Kinabkabilnaka ti asawam?

 

PERLITA                        Pinarusokannaka ti asawam?

 

NATIVIDAD                        Inarrabisnaka ti asawam?

 

FELY                                    Santa Maria a babassit, Santa Maria a dadakkel! Melita, Melita, kasanoka a nagibtur? (Agdung-aw, agabungot nga agdung-aw).

 

AMIN A BABBAI            (Agabungotda met amin nga agdung-aw) Santa Maria a babassit, Santa Maria a daddakkel, Santa Maria ti agnanayon a kaasi.)  

 

MELITA                        (Ipakitana ti imana, bidingenna, sana ipakita iti tallaong). Kitaenyo dagitoy nga ima. Rigat, rigat, panagsagaba. Dagitoy, dagitoy met laeng nga ima ti nagat-atipa kadagiti amin a ranggas kaniak ni Rodrigo.

 

PERLITA                        Inkarina ti ayat kenka?

 

MELITA                        Inkarina ti lubong!

 

NATY                                    Inkarina nga aganus?

 

MELITA                        Inkarina ti ayat a tungpal biag!

 

LETY                                    Ngem apay, Melita?

 

PERLITA                        Ngem apay dagiti dunor?

 

NATY                                    Ngem apay dagiti sugat?

 

MELITA                        Dagitoy nga ima ti nangsarapa kadagiti gemgemna. These are the hands that worked all day from morning to evening. (Iti kada isawang da Lety,  Naty, ken Perlita, ipakitana dagiti imana, ipakitana iti tallaong).

 

LETY                                    Those hands protected you from harm, Melita.

 

NATY                         Kinaluban dagita nga imam dagiti sugat iti bagim, Melita.

 

PERLITA                        Those hands, Melita, those hands! These are the hands that kept you alive. Sibiagka, Melita. Sibiagka, sibibiagka.

 

MELITA                        Nabayagakon a natay.

 

LETY                                    Manangngaasi ni Apo Dios.

 

MELITA                         Manangngaasi ni Apo Dios ngem madudog ti bagi.

 

NATY                                    Mangwayawaya ti manangngaasi a Dios, Melita. Ruk-atannaka iti kastoy a kasasaad.

 

MELITA                        Mangwayawaya ni Apo Dios ngem nakapupok ti pusok iti pagbaludan. Maikarsel iti ranggas.

 

ANDREA                        Agkararagtayon.

 

ALL WOMEN            Santa Maria, ikkannakam iti kired nga agsagaba.

 

LETY                                    Ikkannakam iti kired nga agsagaba.

 

PERLITA                        Ikkannakam iti kired nga agsagaba, Apo. Give us strength to endure.

 

NATY                                    Punnuem ti ayat iti pusomi, Apo, tapno makaanuskami. Give us love to endure, give us patience to endure.

 

FELY                                    Diak mapanawan ti asawak. Nagkariak a diak panawan. Patayennak no panawak.

 

ANGELI                        Dangnga a bakbaketan. Kuneng. Isarapatana ti bagina iti kada danog ti asawana? ‘Nian a nakem! Denggenyo: adda dagiti makagteng iti naluomen a tawen ngem di met agnakem.

 

FELY                                    Inkarik ti panagdennami ingganat’ tungpal biag!

 

ANGELI                        Kari ti nengneng. Kari ti maag. Ha, hahahahaha! Patayem ti bagim iti nagan ti langgong nga asawam? Hahahahaha (sinister laughing till the end.)

 

 

MELITA                        Amin a babbai, dumngegkayo: Dagitoy nga ima ti nagsarap iti ranggas ti asawak. Dagitoy met laeng nga ima ti nangsappuyot iti singin nga anak nga impasngayko kalpasan ti ranggas.

 

PERLITA                        Nagaruyot ti dara kadagiti imam.

 

MELITA                        Nagaruyot ti dara kadagiti luppok.

 

NATY                                    Immuna a pinarusokannaka ni Rodrigo.

 

FELY                                    Insarunona ti agassawa nga arrabis, sa agassawa pay nga arrabis, agingga a nagbariwenwengka.

 

PERLITA                        Natalimudawka! (Matalimudaw, maipatugaw iti datar ti entablado).

 

NATY                                    Maawananka iti puot (Maawanan iti puot; aglusdoy iti entablado).

 

LETY                                    Mapukawmo ti simbeng ti panunot. (Kasla agballa nga agtaraytaray, agpaggaak nga agsangit, agsangit nga agpaggaak, santo makusbo iti entablado)

 

ANDREA                        Agkararagtayon!

 

FELY                                    Agkararagtayon! (As soon as Lights Off, Fely moves to backstage for the beating behind the stage)

 

ANGELI                        Sige, sige, agkararagkayon! Agkararagkayon tapno mangngegnakayo ti langit! (Hahahahahaha!)

 

 

 

 

 

COMPLETE LIGHTS OUT.       

 

Scene shifts to stage. All women on the floor, in varying degrees of abuse. LIGHTS IN. VOICE OVER, BACKSTAGE ACTION)

 

 

BERNARD             (Backstage, behind the revolving walls)

                        Patayenka no panawannak! Patayenka no panawannak. I tell you

I will kill you, with this gun, with my own hands. (Freeze)

 

JAMES            (Guns drawn. Stays on that stage. Kisses gun, drawn, and kisses again.)

                       

FELY                        (Voice over, backstage). (Drums beating frenzied) Ay, ay, ay, saan. Dinak saktan. (Runs behind the walls, keeps crying…) Saan, saan!

 

(As beating begins, all women rise up, one at a time, and say their lines, kneeling down)

 

PERLITA            (Kneeling, lighted candles, before a saint, in one corner)

                        Amami nga addat’ sadi langit. Amami, amami (ipukkawna iti udina…)

 

NATY                        Our father in heaven, our father in heaven…

 

MELITA            (Kneeling, lighted candles, before a saint, in one corner, together with

Daughter 1) Hail Mary, full of grace…Ave Maria a napnokat’ grasia

 

ANGELI            Saan a kararag ti solusion ti problematayo.

 

FELY                        Angeli!

 

ANGELI            Dikan agibtur, lilang.

 

PERLITA            Pakawanennakami, pakawanennakami…

 

NATIVIDAD  Ugasam dagiti basbasolmi, ugasam dagiti imami, San Macario, Santa

                        Isabel, San Procopio, Santa Santissima

 

(FRENZIED DRUM, LOW AND SLOW AT FIRST, THEN RISES)

 

ANGELI             (Goes to the center of the stage). Siak, siak ti apoko dagitoy amin a basol.

Testigoak kadagitoy amin a pakababalawan. Apokonak dagitoy amin nga estoria ti kinaranggas: ni nanang, ti ikitko, ti maysa pay nga ikitko, ti kaarrubak, ni manangko.

Babbai, lallaki, amin dagitoy ket biktima ti kastoy.

 

Malagipko ni Nanangko:

 

PERLITA                        (Cries out) Huston, husto kadin ala.

 

ANGELI                        Malipko ni Anti Melita…

 

MELITA                        Papuliska no dinak sardengan.

 

ANGELI                        Malipko ni Anti Naty…

 

NATY                                    Saan nga umdas ti ayat. Diakon kayat ti agsagaba.

 

ANGELI                        Malagipko ni Anti Letty…

 

LETTY                        Ingkabesak amin a ranggasmo. Amin a disnog a napan iti rupak, iti rusokko, iti bagik. Saanen, saanen. Dikan mapakawan pay. Waswasentan ti tanikalata.

 

ANGELI                        Idi, kastoy dagiti pasamak, kas met laeng kaniak. Kinunak iti asawak: Saan, saan, dinak patayen, ayatko! I love you, I love you, I will always love you forever!  (Pagungtanna ti bagina) Dangnga, agimmamartirka ngamin. Kasla ka met laeng iti inam, kadagiti ikitmo.

 

PERLITA            Saan, saan, dinak patayen! Saan, wen, saan, wen, patayennakon! Ibabam ti paltog, saan, saan, dinak patayen, ti paltog!

 

JAMES/VOICE OVER            Saan a sika a babai ti mangluglugit iti ulok. Saan a

sikat’ mangperdi iti dayawko.

 

ANGELI            Saan, saan, sika laeng ti ay-ayatek.

 

FELY                        Wayawayaannakon. Ruk-atannakon.

 

JAMES/VOICE OVER                        Loklokuennak! Mangloklokoka. Is-isemam ni Juan. Nakitak ti panagisemmo.

 

ANGELI            (From the audience) Saksiak kadagitoy a ranggas. Iti lagipko. Ditoy

 pusok. Ditoy panunotko. Amin, amin dagitoy…

 

SFX. Slapping and crying and sobbing behind the walls, and the stomping of feet.

 

ANGELI            Nangngegyo? Did you hear that?

 

FELY                        Saan, saan. Huston.

 

BERNARD            Gunggunam. Dangnga, sarampiting. Ania, sika ketdin ti nagpantalon.

                        How dare you do that to me, you slut!

 

FELY                        Saanak a puta!

 

PERLITA            Saanka a puta, nanang! Ave Maria napnoka iti grasia…

 

BERNARD            Puta!

 

FELY                        Saanak a puta! Dios ti Salve Maria…

 

 

PERLITA             Hail Mary full of grace! My mother is a clean woman like the Virgin

 Mary. Hail Mary full of grace! My mother is not a puta, puta, puta!

 

BERNARD   (Voice rising, and then goes low) Puta, puta, puta!

 

LETTY            Saan a narugit ti inak. Amami a manangngaasi, manangngaasi nga amami!

(Runs to her altar)

 

NATY              Santa Maria santissima, perdoneme, pakawanennak, siak a

managbasol, mamakawanka kadagiti babak…

 

BERNARD            Babai a dangga!

 

FELY                        Pakawanennak.

 

BERNARD            Ibagam nga ay-ayatennak!

 

FELY                        Sika ti ay-ayatek!

 

BERNARD            Ibagam a siak laeng ti ay-ayatem!

 

FELY                        Sika laeng ti ay-ayatek!

 

BERNARD            Ibagam a dinak isinsina!

 

FELY                        Dikanto panpanawan!

 

BERNARD            Ibagam a dinak lipliputan. Tell me, tell me, tell me, tell me that you will

always be true to me.

 

FELY               (Sobbing) Wen, sikanto laeng. Sika laeng.

 

PERLITA            Hail Mary. I will always be true to you. (Freeze)

 

NATY                        A napnoka iti grasia. I will always be true to you. (Freeze)

 

 

PERLITA            Nasam-it nga ayat, nakasamsam-it nga ayat. Ave Maria…

 

 

NATY                        Imnas, kinuna kaniak. Imnas. Imnas (Agkanta) Imnas nga innak

Indaddaduma…Santa Maria nga ina ti Dios…

 

ANGELI            Napintas a linabag ti napalabas.

 

PERLITA            The peak of mountains are the clouds.  The riot of colors in the summer. And there, and there was love. Ayat, ayat. Ave Maria…

 

MELITA            I love you, kinunana.

 

JAMES/VO            I have always love you. Uray no saludsodem ken  Nanangko.

 

MELITA            Nagtalinaedak a sipupudno kenka.

 

PERLITA            Babai a balangkantis, kinunana. Ave Maria purissima…

 

LETTY            Maasika, maasika.

 

ANGELI            Ruk-atandak kadagitoy a sarita. Wayawayaandak kadagitoy a sarsarita. Yes, pulisia daytoy. Siak ti saksi iti kinaranggas a mapaspasamak. Kayatko a maigibus daytoy. Wen, ditoy balaymi. Iti balay ti lilangko, iti balay ni nanangko, iti balay dagiti ikitko.

 

(SFX. SOUNDS OF POLICE CAR COMING, LOW AT FIRST, AND GETTING LOUDER. MUSIC. LIGHT OUTS. MUSIC FADES.)

 

LIGHT IN. PRESENTATION OF CHARACTERS.
